Two More Signs the Humber Is Heading in the Right Direction
This month brought two more significant announcements that underline just how important the Humber has become.
The first is Project Kings Road Humber, where ET Fuels plans to build what the company says will be one of Europe’s largest sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production facilities near the Port of Immingham. The project will convert waste materials into low-carbon jet fuel, helping aviation reduce emissions while bringing major investment and skilled employment to the region.
As ET Fuels CEO Lara Naqushbandi explained: "Project Kings Road Humber represents a major vote of confidence in the Humber and in Britain's industrial future." She also described the Humber as: "One of the UK's most important energy and logistics hubs." Just a short distance away, another major milestone was announced.
The UK Government has approved development funding for Viking CCS, moving one of the country’s most significant carbon capture and storage projects another step closer to becoming reality.
Once operational, Viking CCS will transport carbon dioxide from industrial facilities across the Humber before safely storing it deep beneath the North Sea, helping some of Britain’s largest manufacturers reduce their emissions.
According to Graeme Davies, Executive Vice President at Harbour Energy: "This milestone sends a strong signal that the Viking CCS project can make a significant contribution to industrial investment and economic activity in the Humber." Meanwhile, a spokesperson the UK Government Energy Ministry described carbon capture as being: "Vital for Britain's clean energy future... driving investment, economic growth and supporting thousands of good skilled jobs." Taken together, these announcements tell a much bigger story.
The Humber Isn't Betting on One Technology
